NHL 09 Final Hands-On
by Ray Almeda | 09/03/08 | 11:40 AM PST

It's no secret that EA Sports hasn't pushed their hockey titles with the same level of vigor that they have the rest of their core sports brands in a long time. It's not exactly a mystery why that is, either. While the Canadian populace at large and a sprinkling of similarly intelligent folks around the globe may have embraced the simple truth that hockey is the single greatest sport in the history of mankind, the vast majority of Earth's population is still playing catch up. They'll 'get it' eventually, but in the mean time the market's lack of enthusiasm has forced EA to devote most of their budget toward Madden and NBA Live for the American audience, FIFA for the European audience, and Tiger Woods PGA Golf for the ever-broadening 'we love to be bored out of our skulls' demographic. The pecking order received a bit of a shake-up last year when EA Sports Vancouver put together NHL 08, the most innovative, well-executed and critically acclaimed sports game in years. Now the team up in Vancouver is looking to improve over last season's all-star effort and leave the rest of the games in EA's stable to play catch up alongside their fans.

Hands-On: FIFA Soccer 09
by Ray Almeda | 09/03/08 | 1:39 AM PST

When FIFA 08 came out to a good reception, the producers were open to what the next year would hold for EA's franchise football game, and took it to the fans for their opinions on what they would like to see changed for the 2009 version. After sitting down with some FIFA producers and talking to them about how much things have changed over the last year of production, while also getting the chance to sit down and play a friendly or two, it's safe to say that this year's FIFA looks like it will impress.

Final Hands-On with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
by Ray Almeda | 08/24/08 | 12:05 AM PST

Recently, Sports Joystick was able to get a hands-on look at Tiger Woods 09, which is coming out soon to numerous platforms. EA Sports allowed us to get up close and personal with the new version of their golf franchise, and even though Tiger might be sidelined until The Masters or so, he's still as prevalant as ever in his new game. Playing the XBOX 360 version, we'll take a look at some of the good along with some of the bad and we'll split it up 50-50 with three things we liked and three things we didn't like, with the things in the "didn't like" category reading more like wants and desires.

Post-Game Wrap-Up: EVO Championship Series 2K8
by Ray Almeda | 08/22/08 | 12:00 PM PST

While some might be surprised to see a fighting games article here on Sports Joystick, it needs to mentioned that while this is a website that is all about sports gaming, there is also room for gaming competitions. This is a competition-based website, both in the games we review and in the competitions we follow, so while this may be a curveball of sorts, it still serves as an example as to what Sports Joystick is all about: competition through gaming.

Sports Joystick headed to Las Vegas on August 8 for the biggest gaming tournament in the world, where the best collide over three days to determine who is best at their respective fighting game disciplines. What started back 12 years ago as a small tournament of a bunch of trash talking fighting game enthusiasts has turned into the premiere competition for those games, and with it comes a history that really shows how this tournament has grown over the last decade. As far as gaming competitions go, this one might be the most heated in gaming history. This...is EVO.

Exclusive Interview: EVO/Capcom's Seth Killian
by Ray Almeda | 08/22/08 | 11:49 AM PST

On August 8, EVO 2k8 celebrated 10 years of fighting game competition with an action-packed weekend at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. We caught up with Seth Killian, the director of the tournament and a producer at Capcom to talk about the different aspects of the tournament, where a group of 64 trash-talking gamers grew into a 3-day event that sees thousands of fighting game fans attend each year.

TL: So why don't you tell us a little bit about EVO.

SK: Well, it's EVO 2k8. Basically, it started on the Internet. We had a bunch of people that were griping and we all grew up in arcades, and the Internet was a little bit young and we decided "We better figure out who's really the best," there was a lot of trash talking.
